A Marina Piatti

Enamel bowl full of honey

You Marina, audacious buccaneer

roaming the seas of the improbable

and leaving tracks in the lairs of the possible

confess, then, your clandestine birth

from prodigious and guilty origins.

We know: you are the daughter of a comet

and were born at midnight

under the rump of a black camel

in the caravan of the Three Kings.

Everyone covered their eyes,

but a long-haired Persian page

played a four-stringed mandola

to draw the morning out of the night.

As your first venture you stole the twinkling

and restless tail of your mother

and hid it under your eyelids.

Thief of light, greedy for mirrors

and extravagant with enchantments, enigmas

holder of keys without locks.

Shattered words, signs and slaps

glue, paint, varnish or just rain

multi-coloured lightning bolts, columns and corridors

tender storms on festive rainbows

baroque charades  to ‘show a miracle made sure’…

You make pavements bathed in moonlight come into flower

forests of paper, launch warrior

stone coriander, ballerinas without tutus

giddy and fleeting in the labyrinths

where Klimt lost the thread. Arianna of the Po Valley,

keep a drawing room where Circe and the Sybil

come to brew with Calypso philtres

and potions, suffumigations and techniques

because of which we, astounded and admiring,

cannot but hand over to you the keys

to our heart... But out of them you make a

lock pick for the safes of glory

and a string for the kite of fortune

on which fly high your hopes
